B.A. English Language
The B.A. English Language programme at the Iconic University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the English Language, its structure, and its use in a variety of contexts. The programme combines a broad–based foundation of linguistics with an in–depth exploration of the English Language and its many forms. Core modules cover topics such as language structure and analysis, language in society, English Language history and English Language teaching. Students have the opportunity to choose from a range of optional modules, allowing them to tailor the programme to their own interests and career aspirations. The programme also includes an applied element, allowing students to develop their professional skills in the context of their studies. Upon graduation, students will be well–equipped to pursue a range of careers in the fields of education, publishing, journalism, and communications.
The objectives of the programme are to:
- train students to acquire adequate communicative competence in both the spoken and written varieties of the English language, thereby providing them a good grounding and effective mastery of the language, adequate self-expression, and self-actualisation;
- equip the students with the knowledge of the forms and features of the varieties of English used in different professional domains such as business communication, legal communication, electronic broadcast media, print journalism, advertising and sports commentaries, book publishing, and biography writing;
- empower the students with adequate linguistic knowledge of the English Language through a detailed study of its sound system, lexicon, syntax, semantics, and its usage;
- adequately prepare the students to pursue postgraduate studies in English Language, linguistics, and to take up teaching and research at the appropriate level of education;
- orient students towards self-employment by focusing on skills such as writing (e.g. of articles in magazines, of speeches; designing and presenting special programmes on radio or TV, designing and publishing magazines, etc.), creative writing, and other kinds of original output through independent thought, inventiveness and creativity;
- enable students to overcome deficiencies in their English usage; and
- instill in students the skills of critical thinking, scholarly rigour, and effective writing.
B.A. English Language degree allows graduates to pursue a career in journalism, writing, editing, and publishing. They can write for newspapers, magazines, websites, and other media outlets. They can also edit and proofread articles, manuscripts, and other written works. Those with a B.A. English Language and Literature degree can also pursue a career in communication and public relations. They can work as public relations officers, communications specialists, and marketing executives.
They can also work in the field of corporate communications, creating and managing communication strategies for companies and organizations. Other career paths include becoming a copywriter, content writer, or social media specialist. With the right skills and experience, graduates can also work as translators.
21st Century Skills
The following is a brief illustrative overview of the knowledge, skills, work habits, and character traits commonly associated with 21st century skills that a graduate of the programme should possess:
1. research skills and practices, critical questioning;
2. creativity, artistry, curiosity, imagination, innovation, personal expression;
3. perseverance, self-direction, planning, self-discipline, adaptability, initiative;
4. oral and written communication, public speaking and presenting, listening;
5. leadership, teamwork, collaboration, cooperation, facility in using virtual workspaces;
6. information and communication technology (ict) literacy, media and internet literacy, data interpretation and analysis, computer programming;
7. civic, ethical, and social-justice literacy;
8. economic and financial literacy, entrepreneurialism;
9. global awareness, multicultural literacy, humanitarianism;
10. scientific literacy and reasoning, the scientific method.
Admission into Iconic University for bachelor’s degree does not require JAMB result, but candidate will be asked to get a JAMB regularization number upon successful admission in order to be used for his/her NYSC at the time of graduation.
- 100 Level (Freshman)
- Five (5) credit passes in WAEC, NECO, NBAIS, or similar bodies as recognized. The credit passes must include English Language, and or Literature in English, at not more than two sittings.
- Five (5) merits in NABTEB or Teachers Grade Two examinations in Arts or Social Science subjects. Also, the credit passes must include English Language.
- 200 Level (Sophomores)
- The Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) with a merit pass in English Language in addition to a credit pass in any Art and Social Science.
- National Diploma (ND) in English Language from reputable institutions with a minimum of Lower Credit.
- GCE Advance level with at least two credit passes.
- OND with evidence of proficiency in English Language and/or Literature in English.
- Certificate in English Language or the equivalent from a recognised university in addition to three O’ Level papers in Arts or Social Sciences.
- First degree (B.A. and B.Sc.) in any programme
Iconic University charges modest fees that give learners the chance to pay per semester only. Nigerian candidates seeking admission will pay an application fee of N10,000 and $30 would be paid by international applicants.
