Academic Pattern

Preamble

The Iconic University of Open Learning seeks to be student-centered and place a very high premium on student-friendly education that is outcome-based. The University’s curricula shall be market-driven and development-oriented. The curricula in all the University’s programs, shall be faithfully implemented within the context of a stable and conducive environment, with a predictable and stable academic calendar.

 

The University students shall be fully exposed to the broad spectrum of learning regimes consistent with the student learning experience required to produce the kinds of graduates envisioned by the University. It is envisaged that this approach will engender the acquisition of the requisite skills, knowledge and abilities for survival and gainful participation in the highly competitive, technology-driven milieu in the wake of globalization.

 

Consequently, the curriculum which will be designed to take cognizance of the dynamics of the frontiers of knowledge will be implemented with great dexterity predicated on the skillful and optimal leveraging of information and communication technology (ICT) especially e-learning tools.

The Idea

All students, irrespective of their course of study will be exposed to courses in general studies, languages, ethics, philosophy, history of science, as well as business and entrepreneurship. Every undergraduate student will be required to take courses in entrepreneurial studies and business Management. In addition, entrepreneurship shall be hands-on in the University as it shall provide opportunities, through its work-study program for students to actively work for the University as well as creating employment opportunities for eligible (based on CGPA) students to earn some income doing part-time work for the University in such a manner as to guarantee non-interference with their academic performance. participate in business ventures owned by the 

The Strategic Plan

The Planning, Implementation and coordination of all the entrepreneurial endeavors of the University which shall strive to be a truly entrepreneurial university, shall be undertaken by the centers and units responsible for such. The University will, through collaboration and linkages with world class universities, employ the services of a world-class team of Visiting Professors in the various disciplines. Where applicable, the undergraduate curriculum will involve industrial attachment and a project that will expose the students to basic research methodologies.

 

In view of the system-wide dearth of qualified lecturers in the appropriate numbers and mix, especially in certain critical academic disciplines, the University shall explore the possibility of twinning/articulation arrangements with reputable foreign universities in order to enrich the curricula and pedagogical content of its academic programs.

The Opportunity

The University shall also exploit the vast opportunities provided by the blended learning modality to enrich learning and teaching in all the academic disciplines to be taught. The overarching objective of university is the training of students to imbibe the virtues of hard work, integrity and high ethical standards, in the pursuit of academic excellence and ultimately, to produce globally competitive and nationally relevant graduates, who can confidently take their rightful places, as change agents and active players, in Nigeria’s socio-economic and technological development. Every student of the University will be exposed to the foundation in the core subjects as well as introduction to basic life skills in computing/computer use and an international language.

The Academic Programs

The University shall organize its academic activities along Faculty lines. Academic programs shall be taught in Faculties in the spirit of inter-disciplinary and collaboration, which will enable research and teaching to be undertaken in new and emerging fields which require inputs from a number of diverse areas of expertise.

For administrative convenience, teaching and research activities, though interdisciplinary in approach, shall be organized on the basis of the single subject Department being the basic academic unit. Each of such Departments shall be headed by a professor or where a professor has not yet been appointed, by an academic staff not below the rank of Senior lecturer, who shall serve as Head in an acting capacity.
Academic Departments with disciplinary similarities shall be clustered into Faculties headed by Deans. Each Faculty shall have a Faculty Board whose membership shall comprise all full-time academic staff in the Faculty with the Dean as Chairman. The Vice-Chancellor shall be an ex-officio member of each Faculty Board. A staff of the Registry Department, to be called Faculty Officer, shall serve as Secretary of each Faculty Board.
