Master of Public Health
The Master of Public Health at Iconic Open University is a 3-semester programme designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and mastery to address complex public health challenges. The programme incorporates a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on fields such as epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, and health policy. Students will learn how to analyze public health data, develop interventions, and evaluate programs to improve the health of populations.

The objectives of the programme are to:

The Master of Public Health with specialization in Epidemiology is designed to prepare students for careers in public health with a focus on epidemiology. The programme offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers topics such as disease surveillance, outbreak investigation and control, and disease prevention and management. Students will develop a deep understanding of epidemiological methods, data analysis, and research design, as well as gain practical skills through hands-on training and field experiences. With a strong emphasis on evidence-based practice, graduates of this programme will be equipped to address critical public health issues and contribute to the improvement of population health.
The Master of Public Health with specialization in Community Health equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to address various health issues at a community level. The program aims to produce competent public health professionals who can contribute towards improving the health and wellbeing of individuals, families, and communities. Through a combination of theoretical and practical courses, students will learn about community healthcare systems, disease prevention and control, health promotion, and policy development. Graduates of this programme will be prepared to work in a variety of settings such as government agencies, non-profit organizations, and international health organizations to create and implement effective health interventions at the community level.
The Master of Public Health with specialization in Biostatistics & Informatics is designed to equip graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary to become leaders in the field of public health. This interdisciplinary program combines the principles of biostatistics and informatics to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data. Through a combination of theoretical foundations and practical applications, students will learn to use statistical tools and technologies to effectively address public health issues and inform evidence-based decision-making. The Master of Public Health with specialization in Disaster & Humanitarian Management is designed for individuals looking to have a deep understanding and practical skills in managing disasters and humanitarian crises. The programme aims to provide students with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness, response and humanitarian efforts using evidence-based approaches and strategies. Through a combination of theoretical and practical courses, students will develop the necessary competencies to design, implement, and evaluate effective disaster and humanitarian management interventions. Graduates of this programme will be equipped with the necessary skills to work in a variety of roles in disaster and humanitarian management at national and international levels.
The Master of Public Health with specialization in Environmental and Occupational Health is a comprehensive programme designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to address the complex public health challenges in these critical areas. The programme provides a multidisciplinary approach, incorporating principles of epidemiology, toxicology, environmental science, and occupational health to develop effective strategies for preventing and managing environmental and occupational hazards. Students will gain a deep understanding of the impact of physical, chemical, and biological agents on human health, as well as the social, political, and economic factors that influence environmental and occupational health. This MPH programme prepares graduates for a diverse range of career opportunities in public health, environmental health agencies, occupational safety organizations, and other related fields.
The Master of Public Health with specialization in Health Financing and Hospital Management is a comprehensive programme that prepares individuals for leadership roles in the healthcare industry. This programme equips students with a thorough understanding of healthcare financing models, hospital operations, and management practices, as well as the knowledge and skills necessary to address the complex challenges of delivering efficient and sustainable healthcare services. Through a combination of classroom instruction, case studies, and hands-on experiences, students will develop the critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills needed to navigate the constantly evolving healthcare landscape. Graduates of this programme will be equipped to tackle key issues in healthcare financing and hospital management, and play a vital role in improving the overall quality and accessibility of healthcare systems.
The Master of Public Health with specialization in Health Education, Communication, and Promotion is a comprehensive programme that prepares students for careers in health education, communication, and promotion in various public health settings. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, students will gain a deep understanding of how to effectively promote health and prevent disease among diverse populations. The programme covers key topics such as health behavior change, health communication, social marketing, community mobilization, and program planning and evaluation. Students will learn how to utilize different communication channels, including digital media and social marketing strategies, to deliver health messages and influence behavior. With an emphasis on evidence-based practices and culturally appropriate approaches, graduates of this programme will be equipped to contribute to the improvement of public health and well-being on a local, national, and global level.
To be admitted for the MPH programme, candidate must have 5 O’Level credits passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. In addition to the O’Level requirement above, candidate is expected to:
(a) i. obtain a minimum of second-class lower division in the following disciplines; Public Health, HIM, MBBS, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Health Education, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Community Health, Anatomy, Human Physiology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Environmental Health, Zoology, Physiology, Optometry, Genetics, Environmental Biology, and any other related.
ii. obtain a minimum of second-class lower division for MPH specialization in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Management in the following disciplines; Demography and Social Statistics, Social Standard and/or Social Work and any other related.
iv. obtain a minimum of second-class lower division for MPH specialization in Biostatistics and Informatics, in the following disciplines; Mathematics/Edu, Statistics and any other related.
(b) have a university degree related to health sciences in third class plus 5 years post-graduation experience or HND plus a university PGD at credit level pass, (i.e., CGPA of 3.0/5.0) or 50% on weighted percentage average may be considered for admission. This is also applicable to (a) ii, & iii above.
(c) present NYSC certificate (discharge, exemption or exclusion) for Nigerian candidates.
Iconic University charges modest fees that give learners the chance to pay per semester only. Nigerian candidates seeking admission will pay an application fee of N15,000 and $40 would be paid by international applicants.
